Camp Multimedia

Course Content

week 1: JUNE 20-24
week 2: JUNE 27-July 1

Our focus is DIGITAL MEDIA. Students learn how to integrate photographs, graphics, 2-D and 3-D animation, audio and video into fully interactive (and CREATIVE) projects.

We offer three different areas of interest during both weeks of Camp Multimedia: Design, Animation, and Video/Effects. For those students who have participated in CMM in previous years, we have much more to teach you and welcome you back to learn advanced skills in a particular focus area. The same goes for students who decide to do Week 1, and then follow up with Week 2. Students work individually (with instructor assistance) and also collaborate with CMM peers. Don't forget to check out the CMM Gallery to see what some of last year's students created.

These are our three main content areas, and our Advanced Skills option. All areas are offered Week 1 and Week 2:

  • Design introduces students to a wide range of skills within Adobe's Creative Suite—the image-manipulation software Photoshop that allows students to alter photographs or illustrations in infinite ways; Dreamweaver, the industry standard for webpage development; InDesign, a powerful software for layout; and the open-source image manipulation software that is very similar to Photoshop (but a free download), Gimp. Students will learn about typography, graphic design, creative ways to incorporate visuals, color aesthetics, and gain significant skills in developing web pages, posters, and image collages.

  • Animation introduces students to the powerful 2D animation tool Flash, the 3D animation tool After Effects, and the drawing tool Illustrator, all part of Adobe's Creative Suite. Students learn how to tell stories through animation and integrate animation software across platforms. They learn how to go from concept to building the project and posting it on the web (YouTube).
  • Video/Effectsallows students to explore video aesthetics, from framing to the do's and don'ts of video production. Students shoot with professional Sony cameras, edit using Premiere Pro (students are welcome to work with their own footage), and integrate 3D titling and special effects with After Effects. Both Premiere Pro and After Effects are from  Adobe's Creative Suite. Students will build a creative project from start to finish and upload it to YouTube.

  • Advance Digital Media Skills is for those students who already have significant experience with digital media and want to move to a higher, more in-depth level. For example, they might want to work on one detalied Flash animation during the entire week of CMM, work with a team of peers to experiment with a various range of digital media effects, or focus on new skills within the Creative Suite (Illustrator and Dreamweaver) to get experience in graphic design for the Web. Advanced Multimedia Skills builds on what students already know, and students are welcome to bring not-yet finished projects from home.
